Annyong Haseyo! Good Friends!
We are pleased to hold our 13th baduk friendship match in japan.
Welcome to this match , Korean Players!
We have been good friends since 1990 when this match started. You have always welcomed us with great hospitality when we visited Korea. Now it is our turn to do so.
Here is the guide for the match and trip for you. Please read it before your visit. Thank you for your cooperation.
We are all looking forward to seeing you soon. Have a nice trip and let's enjoy the match !
This time the session is held at IBM cottage Tateyama Beach House. It is located at very south of Chiba Prefecture. Some of Korean people already have stayed there in 1998. Following is a formal site though this is written in Japanese
Tateyama Beach House Formal site
We call this type of event 'Gassyuku'. Gassyuku is a general Japanese word means gathering and staying for a few days to excercise something. We hold this Tateyama Gassyuku twice a year.

Very sorry, but we have a quite tight schedule this time. We have to play 12 or 13 baduk games at least within limited available time.
Hyodoh san will escort you from Narita Airpot to Tateyama station by train. Four of our members(car drivers as Minato-san, Kitani-san, Katoh-san, Kishihara-san. perhaps.) will be coming to Tateyama station to pick you up. We will arrive at Tateyama Beach House around 17:30.
We plan to have a short introduction session after your arrival, but it depends on schedule and situation at that time.
During this gassyuku ,we will make a Baduk match all day and have some hiking on a middle day.
Kitani san will take 5 of your members (Kahn,Kim,Park,Cho,Seo)to Karuizawa cottage after this gassyuku
Wada san will escort 4 of you (Song,Choi,Hur,Jeong) to Nokogiri-Mountain.(no detail plan available yet)
Minato san will escort 2 of you (Jang,Ahn) to some Station. If there is available time, they will go sightseeing somewhere.
Please read carefully this section, so we will be able to have a game smoothly
There are Formal games and Free one. Formal one is called 'Gassyuku League match" and Free one is called 'Free Friendly baduk match' All should play formal one at first. Then after completing formal one , You can play with anyone as a free game. Both games are recorded and got rewarded according with his grade.
Formal games are played in each Class. Free game is a free-style match between Korea group and Japan group. Please select other class people and other country player as your free game opponent.
Some kind of games are recorded as a formal game and also a free game. called this 'double game'.
All the participants are classified into 4 classes (A ,B ,C and D ) by his strength,(classified member list is attached. see participants part of this document.) Then the game will start in each class. This is Handicap game with our specific rules. (We call this "Magata Rule")
Here is a good sample chart, which is of 1998 Tateyama Gassyuku.
This time, the number of players in each class is as follows
classA:11 classB:11 classC:11 classD:10
each player should play with....
some player should play with double game
All players should play with all other players in his class.
So, in case of class A, there are 11 people. so player would play with other 10 people. (surely there are same country player's match, Jang san should play with Ahn san.)
All players should play with professional player 'Mitsunaga Sensei'.
4dan Japanese Professional player Mitsunaga Junzoh Sensei(teacher) will join this gassyuku. and he himself take part in this tournament (all classes) his rank in this gassyuku is 9.5 dan and plays with 3 or 4 players simultaneously. Actually, 38 people have played with him in previous gassyuku. see the picture at that time. picture
This is the 6th time for him to join our gassyku. He will play with all the participants as usual. it is a terribly hard work, but he is very kind to do that.He surely has the right to get the prize....usually got many :(
Almost all players should play with same position of same group class.
This time Classes A and B belong to one group. and Classes C and D belong to anohter . For example 6th position player in Class A (Ahn san )should play with 6th position player in Class B(Hayama san). 8th position player in Class C (Wada san) should play with 8th position player in Class D(SONG DAE SIK san)
Some players should play with double game for the sake of adjusting number of games.
Please consider 3rd condition again, then you see the last player of Class C (Ishida san) does not have his other Class opponent, because there are only 10 people in Class D. So in his case, first free game would also count as formal game. Fre game explanation are clarified later.
One more thing, the number of games of all the player in Classes A, B and C is 12.Then that of Class D is...11. For the purpose of solving this inconsistency, we decide that all the player in Class D play one more additional game. This iis double game, namely his first free game will be also recorded as a formal game. Then all the player would have same number of games , 12.
We do not restrict the playing sequence of player, please find your opponentby yourself and play in your own pace. Be sure to complete all 12 games by 2nd day midnight.
After Formal game, if you have time, Any free game over the class over the country would be played as Friendship match game. Default time rule is 30 minutes chess clock game, but actually you can change to any time rule by 2 player's agreement.
As I related in formal game section, All the korean vs japanese formal game would be recorded also as a free game. Then we can calculate total score of each country's .
Chess clock are used for all games. 40 minutes are given each player. If you had lost your time, that means you loose the game. Please complete your game within that restricted time. In some internet baduk site, this is called 'absolute time rule'. Anyway be careful. :)
In free game,it depends on 2 player's negotiation. 30minutes are recommended.
Usually, winner should record the result on the chart by red felt pen. The name on the left edge is you , and name on the top is your opponent. Professional player is too busy,so you should record the result of the game with him regardless of win or loose .
We use Magata rule as our game's handicap.(both formal one and free one) Magata rule was named by his creator Magata Hisashi san who is one of our member.
In Magata rule, the rank was determined by 0.5 dan scale.(in the case 3dan up) That means next to 3dan is not 4dan but 3.5dan ! also there is 4.5dan ,5.5dan ,6.5dan. Then the diffirence between the player determins the handicap as follows.
| Difference | Stone | Komi(B) | Komi(W) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0 | 6.5 | - |
| 0.5 | 0 | 0.5 | - |
| 1.0 | 0 | - | 5.5 |
| 1.5 | 2 | 0.5 | - |
| 2.0 | 2 | - | 5.5 |
| 2.5 | 3 | 0.5 | - |
| 3.0 | 3 | - | 5.5 |
| 3.5 | 4 | 0.5 | - |
B is black, W is white
Above is our handy setting chart. For example, the game between 4.5dan and 6.0 dan, there are 1.5dan diffirece. 4.5dan player put 2stone as a handi and should make a 0.5point komi, this means, if the game was ended quite same score. 4.5dan player loose that game.
In case of kyu rank plyaers, 1Kyu is estimated as 0dan and 2Kyu is -1dan, for example 2kyu and 3.5dan , there are 4.5dan difference. so 5stone (komi 0.5 from B)is a handicap in this case..
Japan torunament manager and coordinator would calculate all of this matter at the end.
Formal game final result was determined by below
Please see 1998 sample chart
Class A again.Jang san and Moromizato san are same score as 9-2..but 2nd condition was calculated then final rank was determined.
Free game final result was determined by below
For example 8-1 score is better than 10-4 score. and 10-2 is better than 8-0.
Formal game 1st, 2nd, 3rd in each class are rewarded something.
Free game Korean 1st , 2nd, Japan 1st , 2nd are rewarded something.
Generally Formal Prize will be bit better than Free one :)
